About This App

This app plays reference pitches to help you tune a violin or cello, using two different tuning systems.

Equal Temperament

The standard tuning used when playing with piano or other fixed-pitch instruments. Every fifth is very slightly narrowed so all keys work equally well.

Just Tuning

Pure fifths tuned outward from the D string. These fifths ring with almost no beating, matching the natural overtone series — favored for unaccompanied playing.

Passage Tuning

Enter up to 20 notes straight from your music, then loop them — each note rings, followed by silence, to test whether you can find the pitch on your own before it plays again. Note length and the pause between repetitions are both adjustable in Settings, along with five recallable presets.
